While millions of Florida residents struggle with the stress created by the current pandemic, one team is working to provide much-needed support for mental health. A University of North Florida-based group composed of students and counselors came together in April to create Florida Calm — a free mental health support group.

For some people in Florida, mental health services are difficult to access. A lack of insurance, finances, transport or local resources may make it harder to get therapy and support. Florida Calm looks to solve this by offering completely free online group therapy meetings to Florida residents aged 18 and older who do not go to a state college.

Teletherapy, or online therapy, is effective for individuals who may be unable to travel to a health care facility or provider. Given the safety recommendations related to COVID-19, teletherapy’s popularity has boomed as people can receive life-changing care at home while avoiding unnecessary risks.

Other Affordable Teletherapy Options for Floridians

A rise in stress, anxiety, depression and substance misuse during the coronavirus pandemic has prompted many mental health care providers to increase access to life-saving services online. The University of Florida hosted a daily average of nearly 1,500 telehealth visits by April 16, a stark increase from the March 12 average of 20. To meet the quickly increasing needs of Florida residents, the university helped 1,300 health care providers get connected to and trained in telehealth technology.

In addition to state-based telehealth options, there are many valuable resources and services found online. Platforms like Talkspace connect people in need of mental health care to professional therapists and counselors, and the services are covered under many health insurance plans. Many telehealth providers can also provide services on a sliding payment scale for those without insurance, allowing patients to find treatment that fits their budget. There have also been recent expansions that allow Medicaid and Medicare to cover some telehealth services.
