Covering the costs of drug and alcohol rehab can be difficult, but Aetna can help. This page explains the health insurance plans Aetna offers and how to determine your coverage.

Aetna Provider Overview

Based in Hartford, Connecticut, Aetna is a health insurance company that has helped its members lead healthier lives since 1853. In 2018, they joined CVS Health Family to expand their services and reach a wider audience.

Aetna offers several health care plans. Coverage will differ depending on your plan.

Aetna Plans and Coverage Levels

Aetna offers two types of health insurance plans: HMO and PPO plans. These plans vary depending on the state you live in.

  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): Members pay lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs under these plans. However, they can only see in-network providers and must obtain a referral to see specialists.
  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): Aetna PPO members pay higher premiums but can see out-of-network specialists without a referral.

Aetna PPO insurance plans come in three tiers: bronze, silver and gold. With Bronze plans, members pay lower premiums but have higher deductibles and coinsurances once the deductible is met. Gold plan members pay higher premiums but have lower deductibles and coinsurances.

Aetna also offers government-funded Medicaid and Medicare plans.

  • Medicare is available to those 65 and older or who have disabilities and meet certain income requirements.
  • Medicaid is available to those with certain income requirements or special health needs.

Does Aetna Insurance Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Under the Affordable Care Act, all health insurance plans are required to offer coverage for mental health services, including addiction treatment. Aetna provides substance use treatment coverage in its HMO and PPO plans. Your specific policy and needs determine coverage. Covered services may include:

  • Medical detox
  • Inpatient care
  • Outpatient treatment
  • Behavioral therapy

Does Aetna Cover Mental Health Services?

Aetna’s HMO and PPO plans offer some coverage for mental health services. You may be eligible for some of the therapies at Orlando Recovery Center, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). You can check your benefits by using our benefits checker or calling the number on your member ID card.

Aetna and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Your plan will determine which medications Aetna covers. You can search specific medications on Aetna’s website to see what your policy covers. You may need a referral from your primary care provider for MAT if you have an Aetna Medicaid or Medicare plan.

Orlando Recovery Center offers patients medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when medically appropriate. While not necessary for everyone, MAT can benefit people with alcohol or opioid addiction.

Aetna offers coverage for MAT medications used to treat opioid use disorder, including:

  • Buprenorphine
  • Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone).

It may also cover anti-anxiety medications offered at Orlando Recovery Center, including:

  • Ativan
  • Clonazepam

Aetna Treatment Duration

While recovery looks different for everyone, many people stay in an addiction treatment center for 30, 60 or 90 days. The treatment duration Aetna will cover depends on your health needs and recovery plan.

Coverage may include up to six weeks of care in an inpatient setting and 12 weeks in outpatient care. However, this depends on your policy and whether you have met your deductible. The best way to determine coverage is by calling the number on your Aetna member ID card.
