How is Kaiser Permanente different from other insurance?

Kaiser Permanente is both a health plan and a care system. Many members get most of their care from Kaiser’s own doctors, hospitals and medical offices. Because Kaiser coordinates so much of its members’ care, plans often route substance use treatment through Kaiser’s behavioral health or addiction medicine team first.

Depending on your plan, that team may need to refer you to an in-network facility like Orlando Recovery Center, or approve your care before admission. We can contact Kaiser with you to find out what your plan asks for.

Does Kaiser Permanente cover drug and alcohol rehab?

Kaiser plans generally cover substance use disorder treatment when it’s medically necessary. At Orlando Recovery Center, your Kaiser plan may help pay for:

  • Medical detox. Our medical team monitors you around the clock while alcohol or drugs leave your body, and uses medications to manage withdrawal when appropriate.
  • Residential (inpatient) rehab. You live on our Orlando campus and take part in structured treatment and therapy every day.
  • Partial hospitalization (PHP). Treatment for most of the day, several days a week, as a step down from residential care.

Do I need a referral or prior authorization from Kaiser?

Often, yes. Many Kaiser plans require a referral, prior authorization or both before detox, residential care or PHP begins. During your benefits check, we’ll find out what your plan needs and help with the request so approvals are in place before you arrive.

How long will Kaiser cover treatment?

Your length of stay is based on your clinical needs and what your plan approves. Typical stays at Orlando Recovery Center:

  • Medical detox: most patients stay 6 to 9 days
  • Substance use residential: 14 to 21 days
  • Substance use PHP: 14 to 21 days

Health plans often approve treatment a few days at a time. Your care team keeps Kaiser updated on your progress so it can review whether more days are medically necessary.

What will I pay with Kaiser?

It depends on your plan. Because we’re in network with Kaiser Permanente for substance use treatment, your costs are usually lower than at an out-of-network facility. Ask about your deductible, copay, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum, and whether your plan has limits on days of care.

How do I check my Kaiser benefits?

  1. Call (407) 680-1226 or use our insurance form.
  2. Have your Kaiser card ready. We’ll need the member ID (medical record number), the group number if there is one and the policyholder’s name and date of birth.
  3. We verify your benefits with Kaiser. Then we tell you what your plan is likely to cover, what you may owe and whether a referral or prior authorization is needed.

When you’re ready, here’s what to expect at admission.

Can I continue with outpatient care or IOP after treatment?

Orlando Recovery Center doesn’t offer outpatient care or IOP. Our sister facility, Orlando Outpatient Center in Maitland, offers IOP and is also in network with Kaiser Permanente. As part of your aftercare plan, your care team can help you step down to IOP there.
